2004 has been one of my favorite years for Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County and this Moon Mountain Estate Cabernet is more proof that it still ranks up there for me. Unfortunately, the winery was closed in the summer 2010 and has been under new ownership since January of this year. Their website says they will ‘open soon’ under a new name
I found this bottle at Bev Mo a few years back on closeout. The price was too good to pass up and I had tasted some of their wines before, so it was a good bet. I look forward to seeing what the new owners do with the space and property. It’s difficult to get to the tasting room as it’s at the top of a mountain up a winding road. But in the past it has been worth the drive and likely will be again.
Color: True to Cabernet – dark, rich and little brick starting to develop around the edges.
Aroma: Blackberry, espresso, mocha with just a touch of herbs and green pepper.
Flavor: Cranberry, blackberry, mocha, smoke, and a small amount of earthy/dirt.
Finish: Tart and earthy characteristics mingle nicely on this medium to long finish.
Even though there won’t be any more Moon Mountain made, the vines are still there and some of these flavors and aromas will likely still be showing up in future offerings from this estate. I’ll have to grab some of their first releases to share here.
